A Birth in The Flock – For Flute Choir

A Birth in the Flock

In 2018 Israel Flute Choir commissioned me to write for them a piece. In my first chance, in September 2019, I came to Israel from Atlanta to work with the ensemble, and try a few ideas. After this first encounter I wrote the first movement of the piece.

The subject was the collaborative work. I wanted to hear the musicians listen to each other and create the balance without any grasp at classical harmony.

An then the work stopped. 

In Atlanta, in February 2020, my daughter was born and with her my perspective immediately grew from composition and music to life itself and fatherhood.

In April 2020 the Corona Virus story has started, and we all entered into isolation.

My parents had to cancel their flight and aborted their first meeting with their new granddaughter, and we stayed at home in Atlanta.

The concert was canceled.

When I came back to write the piece in 2021, I was already in a different place, and the first movement was left as an introduction to the narrative of the birth of a girl into a world in a state of isolation.

Now, a few weeks before the primier of the piece, in June 2022, we arrived to visit Israel for the first time since the birth. My two and a half year old daughter finally met my brothers and their kids in Israel, and experienced being part of a large family that loves her and thinks about her on a daily basis.

The piece is dealing with the reality of Israelis in my generation, who left Israel and started new families, and still wonder about the feeling of home.

What kind of life are we cooking to our children, what kind of future can we establish, and what can the art and music give, if not a moment of grace in focusing on the breath, and listening, together with our loved ones.

ב2018 מקהלת החלילים הזמינו אותי לכתוב להם יצירה. בהזדמנות ראשונה, בספטמבר 2019, באתי לארץ מאטלנטה לעבוד עם האנסמבל, ולנסות כמה רעיונות. לאחר המפגש כתבתי את הפרק הראשון של היצירה.

הנושא היה העבודה הקבוצתית. רציתי לשמוע את הנגנים מקשיבים אחד לשני ויוצרים את הבאלאנס ללא אחיזה בהרמוניה קלאסית.

ואז העבודה נעצרה.

באטלנטה, בפברואר 2020 נולדה הבת שלי ואיתה גדלה לי מיד הפרספקטיבה מקומפוזיציה ומוסיקה לחיים עצמם ואבהות. 

באפריל 2020 התחיל סיפור וירוס הקורונה, ונכנסנו כולנו לבידוד. 

ההורים שלי נאלצו לבטל את כרטיס הטיסה שלהם למפגש הראשון עם נכדתם החדשה, ואנחנו נשארנו בבית באטלנטה.

כשחזרתי לכתוב את היצירה ב2021, כבר הייתי במקום אחר, והפרק הראשון נשאר אינטרודוקציה לנראטיב לידתה של ילדה לעולם במצב בידוד.

עכשיו, כמה שבועות לפני הקונצרט הזה, ביוני 2022 הגענו לבקר בארץ בפעם הראשונה מאז הלידה. הבת שלי, בת השנתיים וחצי, סוף סוף פגשה את האחים שלי והילדים שלהם בישראל, וחוותה את היותה חלק ממשפחה גדולה שאוהבת אותה וחושבת עליה על בסיס יומי. 

היצירה עוסקת  במציאות של הישראלים והישראליות בני דורי שירדו מהארץ והקימו משפחות חדשות, ותוהים לגבי תחושת בית.

אילו חיים אנחנו מבשלים לילדים שלנו, איזה עתיד אפשר לבסס, ומה כבר האמנות והמוזיקה יכולים לתת, אם לא רגע של חסד בריכוז בנשימה, והקשבה, יחד עם אהובינו.
